Inside My Gluten Free(ish) Makeup Bag

There are lots of mixed feelings out there about Celiacs using exclusively gluten free makeup. For example, I don't have a strong need to use gluten free mascara — I'm a big devotee of L'Oreal Paris Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara, and once it's on my eyes, I'm not touching it. When it comes to face makeup though, I do like keep all my products gluten free because of the risk of cross contaminating myself (touching my face then picking up food, etc).

Now, some of the products I use, can not be guaranteed gluten free by the manufacturers. This is because many brands wish cover their legal bases, and state that they can not guarantee no gluten cross contamination from the sourced raw materials used in their products. Personally, I choose to still use these products anyways. As a general practice, once I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I began training myself to make great efforts to wash my hands right after applying my makeup, and not touch my face. Now, the makeup I use 100% a personal choice, and everyone has to make their own decision about what products and brands they are comfortable using.

Here are my go-to gluten free makeup items:

• Benefit Cosmetics Dandelion blush — I love this blush, the light pink color is great, and it goes on pretty sheer, meaning it can be layered really nicely.
According to the Benefit website: "We may have wheat germ in a few remaining products, all others have been reformulated to withdraw all wheat protein hydrolysates, even though these ingredients are still widely used elsewhere in the cosmetics industry today. It should however be noted that in spite of all the care we take over the traceability of our raw materials, we cannot guarantee that the raw materials used may not have come into contact accidentally with gluten during their manufacturing process at our suppliers."

• Physicians Formula Bronze Booster — This bronzer has an awesome color / tone that doesn't come out orange at all. It's also fairly well priced.
All Physicians Formula products are gluten free.

• Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide — This foundation is nice and light, and the brand offers a great variety of shades to choose from. I never feel like I have a 'cakey' look when I wear this foundation. I have also never had any kind of glutenous reaction to this product.
According to the Laura Mercier website: "We do not claim that any of our products are gluten free, as they are processed in manufacturing plants where products containing gluten ingredients are also made."

• MAKE UP FOR EVER Mist and Fix — This is a makeup setting spray that goes on light, and moisturizes skin. I use it before a night out to make sure my makeup stays in place!
According to the MAKE UP FOR EVER website: "The following MAKE UP FOR EVER products may contain gluten, or trace elements of gluten: Plasto Wax, Matte Lip, Mat Velvet+, Lift Concealer, Moisturizing Lip Balm and Duo Mat. To the best of our knowledge, the rest of our products are gluten-free based on the information provided by our raw materials suppliers."

• Josie Maran Argan Creamy Concealer Crayon — While this product is technically a concealer, I use it as a highlighter stick (thanks for the tip SEPHORA). I put some on my cheek bones and down the center of my nose, and then blend in (using my SEPHORA Pro Airbrush Concealer Brush) for a nice light face highlight.
According to the Josie Maran website: "The Argan Moisture Stick, the Mini Argan Moisture Stick, and the Argan Color Sticks in Rosey and Petal Pink all contain wheat germ oil. Studies have proven inconclusive as to whether or not wheat germ oil contains gluten, but we believe it's safer to err on the side of caution for those with gluten sensitivity. Our cosmetics are made following good manufacturing practices; however, they may be produced or stored near gluten containing ingredients."

• Dior Addict Lipstick — I have a large collection of various Dior lipsticks (my current fave is the shade 'Beige Casual') and lip glosses and love them all! There are always two or three floating around my makeup bag at any given moment.
None of the Dior lipsticks or lip products contain gluten, and are not produced on lines that contain gluten.

• EOS Lip Balm — Just like my Dior lipsticks, I have EOS Lip Balms in every purse, cosmetic bag and compartment of my car. These lip balms are moisturizing and come in fabulous flavors.
All EOS products are gluten free.
